The Ethiopian Association of Anesthetists successfully conducted its 17th Annual Conference from August 30-31, 2024, at the Ghion Hotel in Addis Ababa. This year’s theme, “Advancing Primary Health Care and Emergency Surgery Through Anesthesia Excellence,” underscored the critical role of anesthesia across various medical disciplines.
In his keynote address, Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Ayele Teshome highlighted the multifaceted nature of anesthesia, extending beyond surgical support to emergency care and other medical services. He acknowledged the contributions of anesthetists to the healthcare system and emphasized the need to address the current shortage of professionals in the field. Dr. Ayele reiterated the Ministry of Health’s commitment to collaborating with the association to increase the number of trained anesthesia professionals and ensure their retention in the healthcare system.
The association’s president, Siraj Ahmed, stressed that anesthesia is a cornerstone of primary health care and the backbone of surgical units. He encouraged anesthetists to continue their dedicated efforts to enhance the quality of health services, reaffirming the association’s dedication to patient safety and the advancement of professional training.
For over a decade, Jhpiego has been a key partner in supporting anesthetist training in Ethiopia. Dr. Tegbar Yigzaw, Chief of Party at Jhpiego, praised the association’s commitment to advancing the anesthesia profession and assured continued support from Jhpiego.
