Cultivating Innovative Teaching Approaches: A Breakthrough in Implementing Problem-Based Learning in Anesthesia and Health Science Programs in Ethiopia

The successful implementation of problem-based learning (PBL) in anesthesia and other health science programs is considered crucial for achieving desired outcomes in education. The Ethiopian Association of Anesthetists in collaboration with Adama Hospital Medical College conducted a PBL trainer of trainee program from June 9th to June 12th, 2023, at the CPD center of Adama Hospital Medical College. This initiative was supported by USAID’s Health Workforce Improvement Program.
The program trained 16 instructors (6F, 10M) from higher education institutions, with participants from the University of Gondar, Debre Birhan University, Addis Ababa University, Arsi University, Adama Hospital Medical College, Woliyta Sodo University, and Dilla University. The goal was to equip these instructors with the necessary skills to implement PBL in their respective institutions.
The workshop addressed various aspects of PBL implementation, including identifying the principles of PBL, constructing PBL cases, facilitating PBL tutorials, conducting assessments during PBL sessions, examining case studies of successful PBL implementation, and discussing common challenges and opportunities associated with PBL. Additionally, participants received training in facilitation skills to enhance their ability to effectively deliver PBL sessions.
The intention is for the trained instructors to cascade the knowledge and skills acquired during the workshop to their faculty members, ensuring the wider adoption of PBL in anesthesia and other health science programs across Ethiopia. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the quality of education and ultimately contribute to the success of outcome-based education in the country. #EAA #AHMC #USAID #HWIP #Jhpiego #FMOH #healthcare #development
