Improving access to essential and emergency surgical and anesthesia procedures can be achieved by cascading quality surgical and anesthesia care to primary health care units.

To achieve this, the Ethiopian Association of Anesthetists and Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureau, with support from the USAID Health Workforce Improvement Program, have started providing Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for 30 anesthetists and sub-city specialty team coordinators working in 9 health centers with operation room/blocks and Addis Ababa sub-city health offices respectively.
This CPD program has been designed to enhance perioperative patient safety, improve the efficiency of anesthesia and surgical services, and boost the quality of monitoring and evaluation of anesthesia and surgical key performance indicators.
To further improve anesthesia service quality, Addis Ababa Health Bureau and the Ethiopian Association of Anesthetists have planned to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to implement quality improvement activities. These activities will include conducting a workload indicator for staffing need assessment in 19 health centers and cascading the CPD program for the health workforce in Addis Ababa health facilities.
